Achilles rupture will need medical intervention immediately. If the Achilles tendon is not completely ruptured medical intervention and physical therapy should be explored first. When the Achilles ruptures the calve muscle will spring up, and there will be no visible Achilles, movement will be immediately impaired.
Massage is recommended once doctor/ physio approval around 6 months post op. Massage becomes more important later on during recovery. The tendon and the muscle are going to have intense scar tissue that can limit range of motion in ankle potentially making it painful to do daily activities and your favorite exercise/sport. Our therapists are highly trained in locating adhesions and breaking up scar tissue to restore your range of motion.
How can massage help?
Massage can help avoid Achilles rupturing (Sometimes these are unavoidable, an example is as we age we lose about %10 of muscle elasticity every decade we are alive, so if the muscle is not properly warmed up before any springing action it is at risk of the muscle not being elastic enough and tearing at the attachment point). When massage can help is when the calve muscle is very tight (there may even be a pulling sensation at the heal where the Achilles attaches too during activity). Massage can break up adhesions and help increase range of motion in the ankle so that the muscle is functioning properly, and you are able to do the springing action of the ankle so there is no pull at the heal, or pain in the calve during activity.
