What is Myofascial Release and How Can It Help Me?

Myofascial release is a type of gentle, constant massage that releases tension and pain throughout the myofascial tissues.  Though it can help promote healing and injury recovery, many do not know about it.  Even fewer may understand how this specialized form of massage therapy works and how it can help them.  In this blog, we will discuss how myofascial release massages work, the technique used, and other questions you may have about it.

What is the Goal of Myofascial Release?

The objective of myofascial release therapy involves easing tension in tight muscles, which can often lead to painful spasming.  It increases circulation to areas of ischemia, a condition in which blood flow (and thus oxygen) is restricted or reduced in a part of the body.  It stretches areas of fascia, a thin casing of connective tissue surrounding and holding every muscle in place.  It also releases entrapped nerves and decreases muscle spasms.  This treatment can effectively alleviate inflammation, enhance range of motion, and mitigate back pain, as well as reduce stress levels and promote overall relaxation.

How Does it Work?

Myofascial release works by focusing on trigger points, which are areas of tightness in the fascia surrounding muscles.  This is done by applying gentle, sustained pressure to the affected area for 30-45 seconds.  It releases adhesions in the fascia that can cause pain, discomfort, and restricted movement.  This helps to stretch out the connective tissue and promote healing.  The therapist may use their hands or tools, such as foam rollers or massage balls, to apply pressure and target specific areas of tension.

How Much Training Is Needed to Do Myofascial Release in Alberta?

For those who want tobe proficient in myofascial release, it is important to undergo specific training that teaches how to enhance the body's natural healing capabilities through gentle, specialized stretching of the connective tissue. In Alberta, a massage therapist will need to complete a massage therapy program through the Alberta Institute of Massage (2200 hours).  The program is available at many accredited massage therapy training centers in Alberta for massage therapists who are interested in supplementing their education with a professional certificate in myofascial release.

Who Can Benefit from Myofascial Release?

Myofascial release is a therapy that can benefit anyone experiencing pain, soreness, or limited range of motion.  This technique helps to release tension in the muscles and connective tissue, promoting relaxation and improving overall function.  Some specific groups of people who may benefit from myofascial release include:

  1. Athletes: Myofascial release can help relieve muscle soreness and tension, as well as improve range of motion, making it a valuable tool for athletes of all levels.

  2. Chronic pain sufferers: For those dealing with myofascial pain syndrome, a chronic pain disorder caused by tightness and inflammation in the body’s connective tissues, myofascial release is especially effective.  Other chronic conditions include back pain, headaches, neck pain, and more.

  3. Those recovering from injuries: Myofascial release can be a valuable addition to physical therapy for those recovering from injuries, helping to improve muscle function and reduce soreness.
